Alexandria Police Department Criminal Records

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is the main source for local criminal history and arrest records in the city. APD has 322 sworn officers and over 100 professional staff. The Information Services Section (ISS) handles all public records requests from the department. You reach them at 703-746-6200 during business hours, Monday through Friday. The police station is at 3600 Wheeler Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304.

Arrest record requests at APD have specific rules. You must currently live or work in the City of Alexandria to get your own arrest record from this office. Bring two government-issued forms of ID, and at least one must have a photo. The fee is $10.00 payable to the City of Alexandria Treasurer. Requests are only handled in person at the station. There is no mail or online option for arrest record checks through the police department itself.

Police report copies are also available through APD. Crash reports can be ordered online at crashdocs.org/va-alexandriapd for $5.00 per report, or in person at the station for the same fee. Incident reports cost $10.00 per copy and require valid photo ID. Summary reports are available to the reporting party or victim at the Information Management Services counter, which is open 8 AM to 4 PM.

The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk keeps civil and criminal court case files for the city. You can reach the clerk's office at 703-746-4044. Court records here include criminal convictions, civil judgments, divorce decrees, land records, and more. These files are public record under Virginia law. Contact the clerk at 703-746-4044 to ask about their current process and any fees for copies.

Note: Online case searches through the Virginia Courts system do not show sealed or expunged records, juvenile records, or certain domestic relations filings.

FOIA Requests and Alexandria Public Records

Virginia's Freedom of Information Act gives the public the right to inspect and copy most government records. In Alexandria, FOIA requests go through the City Attorney's Office. The current FOIA Officer (Interim) is David Lanier. The mailing address is 301 King Street, Suite 1300, Alexandria, VA 22314. Call 703-746-3750 or email FOIArequests@alexandriava.gov to start a request. The Virginia FOIA Council provides statewide guidance on what records must be disclosed and how agencies must respond.

Alexandria also runs an online FOIA portal through GovQA at alexandriava.mycusthelp.com. You can submit and track requests entirely online. The city must respond within 5 working days, not counting weekends or holidays. They can extend that by 7 more days with notice. Fees cover actual costs, including staff time and copying. Cost estimates are available before you commit. Payment can be made online through GovQA or by mailing a check to P.O. Box 178, Alexandria, VA 22313.

Some records are exempt. These include attorney-client privileged documents, personnel records, criminal history records, and most police offense and incident reports to the extent allowed by law. If a record is denied, the city must give you a reason.

Note: The Alexandria FOIA page has the current request forms and instructions in one place.

Virginia State Background Check for Alexandria Residents

For a criminal history check that goes beyond what local police can provide, the Virginia State Police Criminal Background Check is the right tool. The Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange (CCRE) maintains statewide criminal histories for all jurisdictions, including Alexandria. A criminal history check through CCRE pulls records from every Virginia city and county court that has reported to the state. This gives a more complete picture than a local-only check.

Under Virginia Code Title 19.2, Chapter 23, the CCRE is the official state repository for criminal records. Agencies and authorized individuals submit fingerprint-based requests. Private individuals can also request their own records through VSP. The VSP forms page has the current request forms and mailing instructions. Criminal history records from VSP are the most complete source for records built up over time in Virginia courts and law enforcement agencies.

The Virginia Sex Offender Registry is another statewide tool. It is maintained by the Virginia State Police and is searchable at sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov. Anyone with a qualifying sex offense conviction in Virginia must register, and the registry is public. You can search by name, city, or zip code.

Alexandria arrest and conviction data flows into the CCRE through a live scan fingerprint system. Under Virginia Criminal Code Section 19.2-392.12, agencies that make arrests must submit disposition data to keep state records current and accurate. This ensures that when a person is acquitted or charges are dropped, the record reflects that outcome.

The Alexandria FOIA online portal allows residents to submit public records requests, check request status, and pay fees through the GovQA system.
